Pot culture of Impatiens walleriana

For Impatiens walleriana, pot culture is the standard cultivation method. The plant blooms better in a limited volume of soil, as excess space stimulates vegetative growth at the expense of flowering. Due to the presence of a shallow fibrous root system, the crop is ideally suited for shallow containers, although it reacts acutely to overheating of the pot walls and drying out of the top layer of the substrate.

The plant has a high density of stomata, which makes it less tolerant to dry air. During short periods of drought, the impatiens quickly loses turgor but recovers promptly after watering, which requires caution from agronomists to avoid overwatering. It is important to avoid direct midday sun and provide diffused lighting, as well as to perform regular pinching every 10–14 days to prevent leggy shoots.
