A genetic parameter characterized by the presence of diploid (2n=14) and tetraploid (2n=28) forms, which determines morphological traits, productivity, and the crop's cultivation requirements.

Diploid rye is the natural form of the species with a set of 2n=14, whereas the tetraploid form (2n=28) was obtained through autopolyploidy. Tetraploid varieties produce larger grain with a thousand-kernel weight of 40–55 g compared to 25–35 g in diploids and are distinguished by increased straw resistance to lodging.

Tetraploids are more demanding regarding soil fertility and moisture availability; therefore, diploid varieties are preferable on poor soils. Tetraploid forms have 10–15% lower ear grain set and are more susceptible to ergot infection. Due to the extremely low crossability between diploids and tetraploids, strict spatial isolation is mandatory during seed production.
