Dill lodging

Anethum graveolens L.

Dill lodging is the process of stems leaning or falling, which is critical when growing the crop for seed, as it hinders mechanical harvesting and reduces the quality of the seed material.

In the reference 8 varieties crop Dill, where this is mentioned in the description.

During state variety testing, the lodging resistance of dill is assessed visually immediately before the seed harvest. Agronomists record not only the fact of lodging itself but also its characteristics, including the type of damage, the plant lean angle, and the distribution across the plot area.

A 5-point scale is used to assess the level of resistance, where 5 points correspond to vertically standing plants and 1 point to complete lodging. Intermediate values are determined by the stem angle: 4 points for a slight lean, 3 points for an angle of approximately 45 degrees, and 2 points for a lean of more than 45 degrees.

This trait is of significant breeding importance, as high lodging resistance minimizes yield losses. When growing dill for greens, lodging is of secondary importance, as the harvesting of marketable products is carried out at early growth stages before the plants reach high-risk phases.
