Lodging — Sugar Beet

Beta vulgaris Sugar Beet Group

In sugar beet, the lodging trait is not relevant for commercial root crops, as their yield does not depend on the condition of the foliage. Resistance to lodging is exclusively important in seed production to ensure the feasibility of mechanized harvesting of seed-bearing stems.

For sugar beet crops grown for root production, leaf lodging is not a significant agronomic parameter. The commercial part of the plant is located in the soil; therefore, deformation of the leaf rosette does not hinder harvesting and does not lead to direct yield losses.

In seed production, lodging of seed-bearing stems is an undesirable factor. It complicates mechanized harvesting, promotes contact of seeds with the soil, and reduces their market quality. Resistance to lodging in this context is considered an important varietal trait that ensures uniform ripening.
