Lodging — Brussels sprouts

Brassica oleracea L. (Brussels Sprouts Group)

Lodging in Brussels sprouts is associated with the plant's morphological characteristics: a tall stem (up to 100–125 cm) and a large mass of leaves and sprouts, creating a risk of falling during winds and precipitation.

In the reference 44 varieties crop Brussels sprouts, where this is mentioned in the description.

To assess the resistance of Brussels sprout varieties to lodging, a scale from 1 to 9 points is used, where 1 means complete lodging and 9 indicates high vertical plant stability. Susceptibility to lodging increases with high planting density, which causes stems to develop thinner and less capable of supporting the heavy upper part of the plant.

Biological features of the species, combined with weather factors such as strong winds and heavy rainfall, often lead to a loss of the stem's vertical position. This hinders mechanized harvesting, reduces the market quality of the sprouts due to their contact with the soil, and increases the risk of product damage. Prevention includes hilling the base of the stem and installing supports.
