Rice lodging

Oryza sativa L.

A condition in rice where plants tilt, which disrupts their photosynthetic activity and hinders panicle filling and mechanized harvesting. Resistance is determined by the mechanical strength of the lower internodes of the stem.

To quantitatively assess rice lodging resistance, the lower internode bending method is used, in which the load in grams or newtons required to deform or break the stem is measured. Resistant varieties show a bending load in the range of 66–80 g, whereas susceptible varieties lose stability at values of 56–63 g.

Under field conditions, the degree of lodging is recorded according to international scales as the percentage of plot area with lodged plants during the maturation period. The propensity for lodging is closely related to morphometric indicators: internode length, stem diameter, and the chemical composition of tissues, particularly the content of lignin and cellulose.
