The assessment of triticale lodging resistance is based on a visual scoring scale from 1 to 5, where 5 points correspond to a completely vertical stand and 1 point to almost complete lodging. In breeding practice, instrumental methods are also used, including measuring stem breaking resistance, determining the mass of the second internode, and measuring stem tissue density.
There is a pronounced negative correlation between the height of triticale plants and their lodging resistance, which is why the development of semi-dwarf forms is a key direction in breeding. The tendency to lodge increases in dense stands and with excessive nitrogen fertilization, which requires the control of agrotechnical factors to realize yield potential.
