Variety traits
Tulipa L.
Tulip topple is the loss of stem mechanical strength and the ability to maintain an upright position, caused by physiological disorders during growth.
In the reference 245 varieties crop Tulip, where this is mentioned in the description.
The primary cause of this phenomenon is calcium deficiency in the stem tissues, triggered by impaired transpiration due to high relative humidity in the greenhouse. A lack of calcium, which is transported via the apoplast, leads to a loss of stem rigidity, often exacerbated by waterlogging or oxygen deficiency in the root zone.
The most vulnerable period is the second week of forcing, the phase of rapid stem elongation, when the plant's demand for calcium reaches its peak. Topple is accompanied by a loss of turgor, the development of 'blind' buds, and an increased risk of Botrytis infection, rendering the produce unmarketable.
