Lodging in common vetch is caused by the thin structure of the stem, which leads to reduced seed germination, delayed maturity, and significant harvest losses.

Common vetch has a biological predisposition to lodging due to the structural characteristics of its thin and branched stems. This process negatively affects seed quality by reducing germination rates and vigor, and also promotes regrowth and uneven ripening of the plants.
From a technological standpoint, lodging complicates harvesting, requiring the use of a two-phase harvesting method. Mixed cropping with oats, mustard, or phacelia, which act as supports for the plants, helps reduce this indicator: while lodging in monocultures can reach 74%, in mixed stands it decreases to 22–45%.
