Silage and Haylage — Common Vetch

Vicia sativa L.

Common vetch (Vicia sativa) is primarily used for forage production as part of vetch-cereal mixtures, which provide the necessary sugar balance for quality fermentation and mechanical support for the lodging stems.

In the reference 30 varieties crop Common vetch, where this is mentioned in the description.

Common vetch is not considered a standalone silage crop due to its tendency to lodge and high protein content, which complicates the preservation process. In agronomic practice, it is cultivated in mixed stands with cereal crops, which allows for an optimal sugar-buffering ratio of at least 1.7 and simplifies mechanized harvesting.

Harvest timing depends on the type of forage: for haylage, the full flowering stage is considered optimal, while for silage, it is the stage when glaucous pods appear. Harvesting vetch-cereal mixtures at the wax ripeness stage of the lower-tier grain ensures a dry matter content of 25–30%, which reduces harvesting losses and increases the nutritional value of the feed through the combination of succulent biomass and grain.
