Maize Lodging

Maize lodging is an agronomic trait used to evaluate hybrid suitability for mechanized harvesting, determined by the degree of stalk deviation from the vertical before harvest.

In the state variety testing system, maize lodging resistance is measured visually on a scale of 0 to 5. A score of 5 is assigned to plants that do not lodge, 4 points to slightly lodged plants (deviation up to 30°), 2 points to lodged plants (30–60°), and 0 points to severely lodged plants with a deviation of more than 60°.

The assessment is conducted no later than the milk-dough stage on groups of 100 plants. Lodging, caused by nutrient imbalances, high plant density, or weather factors, reduces the efficiency of mechanized harvesting due to the inability of the header to pick up stalks effectively and increases the risk of crop infection by phytopathogens.
