Miscanthus x giganteus J. M. Greef & Deuter ex Hodk. & Renvoize
The productivity of giant miscanthus (Miscanthus × giganteus) is assessed as the yield of dry biomass per unit area. This indicator determines the economic viability of the crop when used as an energy feedstock.
In the reference 5 varieties crop Giant miscanthus, where this is mentioned in the description.
To assess crop productivity, the gravimetric method is used, based on harvesting and recalculating dry vegetative mass, as well as remote sensing methods to record carbon sequestration. Key biometric indicators that correlate with yield include stem height, stand density per 1 m², and stem diameter.
In the first years after planting, productivity is lower due to root system development and ranges from 9–12 t/ha. In mature plantations, starting from the third year, the yield potential under favorable conditions is 15–20 t/ha, and under experimental conditions, it can reach 25–27 t/ha of dry matter.
High productivity ensures the energy efficiency of the crop and shortens the payback period for plantations, which are operated for 15–20 years. Significant biomass volumes make miscanthus a promising feedstock for the production of solid biofuels, bioethanol, and biogas.
