Rhizome of Giant Miscanthus

Miscanthus x giganteus J. M. Greef & Deuter ex Hodk. & Renvoize

The rhizome is the primary organ for vegetative propagation and a nutrient storage depot for giant miscanthus. It ensures the perennial productivity of the crop and determines plant establishment upon planting.

In the reference 3 varieties crop Giant miscanthus, where this is mentioned in the description.

Giant miscanthus is a sterile hybrid, therefore propagation is carried out exclusively by rhizome division. The optimal mass for a single viable planting segment is considered to be 20–40 grams, with high-quality planting material containing at least 3 nodes.

The development of a robust root system is the key to high biomass yields, with full productivity achieved by the 3rd or 4th year. In a mature plant, the rhizome can reach a diameter of 50–70 cm and a depth of up to 30 cm, and the underground biomass accumulated over 4–6 years becomes comparable in mass to the above-ground part of the plant.

In commercial cultivation, the rhizome planting rate ranges from 7,000 to 40,000 pieces per hectare. Nutrients translocate from the above-ground part to the rhizome in the autumn and back in the spring, which significantly reduces the crop's requirement for mineral fertilizers.
