Sterility in giant miscanthus is caused by meiotic irregularities resulting from uneven chromosome segregation, the formation of univalents, and the appearance of micronuclei. Pollen of this crop is characterized by high size heterogeneity, ranging from 25.5 to 47.6 μm, and extremely low viability, with no gametophyte germination observed either in vitro or in planta.

Sterility is assessed using embryological methods and staining tests; however, the crop exhibits complete obligate sterility. This precludes seed propagation, necessitating the use of vegetative planting by rhizomes, which simultaneously ensures the environmental safety of the plant by preventing its uncontrolled spread via seeds.
