Cytoplasmic Male Sterility in Rapeseed

Brassica napus L.

A genetic mechanism for controlling flowering in rapeseed, used to create F1 hybrids by preventing self-pollination in maternal lines. The trait is assessed through phenotypic pollen absence and molecular diagnostics of fertility restoration Rf genes.

In the reference 23 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.

Sterility assessment in rapeseed breeding is carried out visually during the flowering period or via cytological and embryological analysis of anther condition. Modern methods include PCR diagnostics of orf-type mitochondrial genes and Rf restorer genes to identify genotypes without field testing. The target metric for maternal lines is 100% sterility, whereas pollen viability in paternal lines should be 80–98%.

The use of various CMS types, such as Ogura, Polima, and MSL, allows for controlled hybridization without manual emasculation. The transfer to sterile cytoplasm does not reduce yield structure indicators; however, the use of certain fertility restoration genes may be linked to increased glucosinolate levels in seeds. Selecting specific CMS types for hybridization requires considering their stability depending on environmental conditions in cultivation zones.
