Miscanthus x giganteus is a natural sterile hybrid of Miscanthus sinensis and Miscanthus sacchariflorus. The 'Illinois' clone is a triploid that propagates exclusively vegetatively, as it does not form seeds. The plant forms dense clumps with erect bamboo-like stems, reaching a height of 3–4 meters.
This clone is a thermophilic C4 plant that begins growth in April. It possesses high resistance to diseases, pests, and adverse environmental conditions. Harvesting of dry biomass is carried out in the winter or early spring period when the stems are maximally dehydrated. The crop demonstrates high dry matter yield under industrial cultivation.
