Carrot leaf blights

A group of fungal diseases of carrots, caused mainly by Alternaria dauci and Cercospora carotae, leading to foliage damage and reduced root yield.

The primary pathogens causing leaf blights are the fungi Alternaria dauci, which causes leaf blight, and Cercospora carotae, which causes cercospora leaf spot. When affected by Alternaria dauci, dark brown spots with a yellow halo appear on older leaves, leading to foliage dieback, whereas Cercospora carotae more frequently affects young tissues and manifests as circular spots with a light center.

Resistance of carrots to these pathogens is polygenic in nature and is described as tolerance or partial resistance. Specific monogenic sources have not been identified; therefore, breeding relies on quantitative traits (QTL) and the assessment of accessions on a scale ranging from susceptible to resistant. The division of pathogens into distinct races is not used in breeding practice due to the lack of a universally accepted classification.
