Remontancy in Fig

Ficus carica L.

In relation to figs, the term refers to biferity — the ability of a cultivar to produce two full crops per season: breba on the previous year's shoots and the main crop on the current year's growth.

In the reference 5 varieties crop Common fig, where this is mentioned in the description.

Biferous fig cultivars sequentially set two generations of syconia during a single growing season. The first wave, called breba, develops from fruit primordia on last year's shoots and ripens in early summer. The second generation is formed on current-year shoots and ripens closer to autumn.

Evaluation of the two-wave fruiting ability is carried out through phenological observations. This takes into account the timing of appearance and ripening of each generation, as well as their abundance and the ratio of yields, with mass fruiting defined as the appearance of fruit on 25% or more of the shoots.

The practical significance of this trait is limited by the climatic conditions of the region, as the success of the first wave depends directly on the survival of last year's shoots during the winter. Agronomic management of such cultivars includes specific operations for thinning fruits and shoots to ensure the maturation of both crop cycles.
