Diseases
Hypericum x inodorum Mill.
A fungal disease of tutsan (Hypericum androsaemum) caused by the pathogen Melampsora hypericorum. The disease affects the foliage, causing the appearance of characteristic orange pustules, leading to leaf drop and loss of the crop's ornamental value.
In the reference 35 varieties crop Tall tutsan, where this is mentioned in the description.
The causal agent of rust on tutsan is the specialized fungus Melampsora hypericorum. The infection cycle of this pathogen is completed within plant populations without requiring an alternate host. The disease manifests in summer, starting in June, primarily on the lower leaves.
Externally, the infection is expressed by the appearance of yellow spots that gradually acquire a reddish-brown hue. Characteristic yellow-orange pustules containing spores form on the underside of the leaf. Mass infestation causes premature leaf drop and dieback of shoot tips, which reduces the overall vitality and winter hardiness of the plants.
Specific races of the pathogen and resistance genes for this crop have not been described at this time. Breeding work is focused on selecting forms with field tolerance to infection by roguing susceptible plants from populations.
