In the uredinial stage, the pathogen forms small, powdery pustules of light yellow or orange-brown color on the aerial parts of the plant. By the end of the growing season, the telial stage occurs, during which the pustules become firm, darken to dark brown or nearly black, and lose their ability to release spores.

Rust infection negatively affects the physiological processes of the crop, disrupting plant nutrition and provoking premature leaf senescence. In breeding practice, specific monogenic resistance genes are not used to combat the pathogen, as they have not been described for this crop.
