Leaf spots — Faba bean
Vicia faba L. var. equina St.-Amans
A complex of fungal diseases of faba bean caused by pathogens Botrytis fabae, Ascochyta fabae, Cercospora zonata, Alternaria spp., Stemphylium botryosum, and Ulocladium botrytis.
In the reference 8 varieties crop Horse bean, where this is mentioned in the description.
Chocolate spot manifests as reddish-brown spots on leaves, stems, and flowers, which eventually develop a grey center. Ascochyta blight is characterized by sunken brownish-red spots with black pycnidia. Cercospora leaf spot causes the development of zonate brown spots, while Alternaria blight, under high humidity, is accompanied by an olive-brown velvety coating. Stemphylium blight and red leaf spot are diagnosed by tissue darkening and the emergence of specific red lesions, respectively.
In populations of Ascochyta fabae, pathogenicity groups (PG) are distinguished by their ability to infect differential cultivars. For Botrytis fabae, the existence of physiological races with varying degrees of aggressiveness has also been confirmed. Cultivars with immunity to these pathogens are virtually non-existent; therefore, breeding work is focused on quantitative resistance regulated by polygenic QTL loci. Field assessment of plant disease severity is typically conducted using a 1 to 5 scoring scale.
