Rust of Faba Bean

A fungal disease of faba bean caused by the autoecious pathogen Uromyces viciae-fabae. The disease manifests as pustules on the above-ground parts of the plants, causing premature leaf drop and a decrease in grain yield.

The causative agent of rust is the basidiomycetous fungus Uromyces viciae-fabae, which completes its life cycle on a single host plant without the involvement of intermediate species. The infection persists in the soil and on plant debris as teliospores, ensuring the recurrence of the disease in the following season.

Symptoms of the infection become visible during the flowering phase, affecting leaves, stems, petioles, and pods. Initially, yellowish-orange uredopustules appear on the plant, which eventually transition into the stage of producing powdery light-brown spores. By the end of the growing season, dense dark-brown teliopustules are formed.

Intensive development of the disease leads to the destruction of photosynthetic tissue, premature leaf drop, and the formation of shriveled seeds. Grain yield losses during severe infestation can exceed 15–20%, while breeding for resistance is based on selecting varieties with high field tolerance.
