Vicia faba L.
A disease of faba bean manifesting as chocolate spot. It is caused by the fungi Botrytis fabae and Botrytis cinerea and is characterized by development from small pinpoint lesions to massive tissue necrotization and death of the entire plant.

The disease develops in two phases. The non-aggressive phase is characterized by the appearance of small reddish-brown dots on leaves and stems, visually resembling drops of chocolate. In the aggressive phase, under conditions of high humidity and moderate temperature, the spots rapidly enlarge and coalesce, covering significant portions of the plant organs.
Tissue damage leads to necrotization, the acquisition of a gray-brown hue, possible cracking of the pod valves, and discoloration of the seeds. In severe cases, pathogenesis culminates in the complete destruction of the crop. Specific resistance genes to this pathogen in Vicia faba have not yet been identified; therefore, breeding is conducted through the selection of quantitative resistance traits in germplasm collections.
