A fungal disease of pepper caused by Botrytis cinerea, affecting stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits, primarily in protected ground. It is characterized by the appearance of water-soaked spots and the development of a grey sporulation bloom on the affected tissues.

The causal agent of the disease is Botrytis cinerea Fr. (teleomorph stage Botryotinia fuckeliana). The pathogen affects all aerial plant organs. On stems and leaves, the infection manifests as spreading watery spotting, with tissues turning brown and becoming soft and water-soaked. Under conditions of high humidity, a characteristic greyish-white mycelium and dark grey conidial sporulation develop on the affected areas. Stem girdling often causes the wilting of shoots located above the infection site.

On pepper fruits, the disease appears as olive-green spots that spread rapidly across the surface. Affected flowers undergo necrosis, wilt, and drop. Intraspecific races of the pathogen specific to Capsicum annuum have not been identified. Scientific literature lacks information on the presence of specific resistance genes in pepper against this fungus; therefore, breeding is primarily conducted based on the selection of lines exhibiting complex resistance or tolerance.
