The causal agent of grey mold on Limonium sinuatum is the phytopathogenic fungus Botrytis cinerea, which also has a teleomorph stage known as Botryotinia fuckeliana. The disease is characterized by the appearance of necrotic spots, tissue softening, and drooping of flower stalks. At relative humidity levels above 90%, a grey, fuzzy coating of mycelium and conidia forms on the affected areas.
The infection is most often localized on flowers and flower stalks, especially at sites of mechanical injury during harvesting. From there, the pathogen can spread to petioles and the root zone. Dense planting and poor ventilation are key factors that promote disease development in this crop.
