Variety traits

Pea seedling vigor

Pisum sativum L.

A comprehensive characteristic of the physiological potential of pea seeds, which determines their ability to germinate rapidly and develop viable seedlings under varying environmental conditions.

In the reference 47 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.

To assess pea seedling vigor, morphophysiological methods are used, measuring the length and mass of sprouts and radicles on the 7th–10th day of germination, as well as stress tests simulating salinity or temperature fluctuations. For quantitative assessment, calculated indices are used that combine germination rate and linear sprout dimensions, as well as the historical method of determining the ability of sprouts to penetrate a substrate layer of 30–40 mm.

A high level of seedling vigor in peas correlates directly with field emergence, the plants' ability to effectively compete with weeds, and their ability to overcome stress factors, including deep seed placement. Vigorous seedlings ensure more intensive development of the leaf apparatus and lay the foundation for future crop productivity, influencing the number of pods and the 1000-seed weight.
