Eggplant Vigor

In relation to eggplant seeds, vigor reflects the ability to produce uniform emergence in non-regulated conditions. It is assessed by the sand germination method over 10 days, determining the percentage of emerged sprouts or their total biomass. Seed germination rate is not a direct indicator of vigor.

For vegetative plants, vigor is determined by the height of the main stem and its rate of thickening during various phases of ontogenesis. This trait correlates with varietal characteristics, such as differences between East Asian and West Asian groups, as well as nutrient availability.

Vigor influences the choice of plant density and planting pattern, as well as bush pruning methods. Excessive development of eggplant vegetative mass requires proper pruning to maintain a balance with generative organs, as overly high growth energy can negatively impact yield.
