Oat Silage and Haylage

Oats are used for silage and haylage production primarily in mixed crops with legumes, serving as a support crop. Due to its sugar content, oats provide a moderate ensilability level and serve as the basis for grain haylage.

Their strong stem serves as support to prevent legume lodging, and the biological properties of the crop allow for balancing the feed mixture by the sugar-to-protein ratio, which is approximately 0.91 for oats.

The optimal harvesting time for silage and haylage is the milk or milk-wax stage of grain maturity. During this period, oats are also actively used for grain haylage production, which allows for combining the high energy value of the grain with the fiber of the vegetative mass in the feed. Compared to other cereals, oats are less demanding regarding growing conditions, though they require high-quality compaction of the mass to prevent mold development.
