Coreopsis inflorescence
Coreopsis L.
The inflorescence of Coreopsis is a capitulum on a long peduncle, the parameters of which are key characteristics for DUS testing. The assessment includes measuring the diameter of the capitulum, the number of ray florets, and the density of the inflorescence.
In the reference 37 varieties crop Tickseed, where this is mentioned in the description.
In Coreopsis variety testing, the inflorescence diameter is considered a varietal trait, varying in Coreopsis grandiflora from 5 to 8 cm. Diameter values of 5–6 cm are characteristic of most species, for example, C. lanceolata, while specimens 8 cm and larger are classified as large-flowered.
The crop management of the plant directly depends on the characteristics of the inflorescences. Deadheading spent capitula stimulates repeat flowering; however, for certain species, including C. grandiflora, early or improper pruning after inflorescence formation can reduce the plant's winter hardiness.
When evaluating varieties for cut flowers, the strength of the peduncle and the ability of the inflorescence to maintain its commercial appearance in water for more than seven days are taken into account. Abundant flowering and large inflorescence size increase the load on the stems, which in many varieties causes the bush to lodge and requires the installation of supports.
