The poinsettia inflorescence is a cyathium or a group of cyathia, which are small yellow structures located in the center of the plant. The visually perceived "petals" are actually bracts, the characteristics of which, including size, shape, color, and degree of overlap, serve as the primary traits in DUS testing of varieties.

The initiation and development of inflorescences are directly dependent on day length, as the plant is photoperiodically sensitive.
