To initiate flowering and bract formation, poinsettias require forced darkening, as they are short-day plants. Any interruption of the dark period after October 1 can cause delays or failure in the process. The temperature regime is critical: exceeding 30°C leads to leaf deformation and root loss, and during the first weeks of rooting, air humidity must be maintained above 75%.

The crop has strict requirements for the substrate, with a pH of 5.5–6.5, and nutrient balance. Excess phosphorus causes excessive shoot elongation, and the proportion of ammoniacal nitrogen should be about 30%. Pinching is mandatory to obtain a commercial shape, and due to high sensitivity to root rot and pests (whitefly, thrips), strict disinfection of the facilities is necessary.
