The inflorescence of perennial ryegrass is a spike, the parameters of which are evaluated within the framework of DUS tests. The main characteristics include the inflorescence length, ranging from 5 to 20 cm, the number of spikelets, and the phenological trait of heading time, recorded upon the emergence of the inflorescence from the sheath of the flag leaf.
Breeding evaluation of inflorescences is conducted on a scale of 1 to 9 points to determine the propensity for their formation. Spike length and the number of spikelets have a direct positive correlation with seed yield, making these indicators a priority when selecting varieties for seed production.
For pasture use, heading phenology is important: late appearance of inflorescences is preferred, as intensive development of generative shoots leads to stem lignification and a decrease in the nutritional value of the stand. Heading dates also determine mowing schedules for hay harvesting.
