An inflorescence is the organ where flowers, and subsequently fruits and seeds, are formed. During official variety trials, the inflorescence is assessed using morphometric and visual examination methods to determine compliance with DUS criteria. Parameters are recorded as numerical values of axis length, number of flowers, branches or fruits, or by using a scoring scale reflecting compactness and other significant characteristics.
Inflorescence indices depend on both the variety's genetics and environmental conditions, including agronomic practices and weather conditions during the differentiation of the primordial inflorescence. The final assessment is conducted by comparing against a standard accepted for a specific crop in a given zone, taking into account not only the number of inflorescences themselves but also the actual seed set.
