Broccoli Inflorescence

Brassica oleracea L. (Broccoli Group)

The broccoli inflorescence is a head consisting of numerous shortened floral shoots with unopened buds. As the edible part of the plant, it is evaluated by its diameter, height, and weight.

In the reference 142 varieties crop Broccoli, where this is mentioned in the description.

During variety testing and standardization, the head is measured by its maximum transverse diameter, height along the axial line, and weight. Marketable dimensions of inflorescences vary over a wide range: diameter is typically from 8 to 20 cm, and weight ranges from 250 g to 900 g, reaching up to 2 kg in intensive hybrids.

Head quality depends on the density and condition of the buds: their opening indicates over-ripening and a decrease in marketability. The optimal temperature range for inflorescence formation is between +16...+25 °C, while exceeding +25 °C leads to the formation of loose and small heads.

A biological feature of the crop is its remontancy, manifested by the plant's ability to form additional lateral inflorescences in the leaf axils after the main head is harvested. Total weight and inflorescence density are significantly influenced by moisture availability and adherence to harvest schedules.
