This type of cabbage traditionally forms a central round-flat head of medium density. An important biological feature of the group is the active formation of numerous lateral shoots after cutting the central inflorescence.

Plants of this type are considered less demanding in terms of growing conditions compared to cauliflower and exhibit resistance to low temperatures. Since these varieties are open-pollinated (OP), they do not possess the high uniformity characteristic of modern F1 hybrids.

Various breeding lines, differing in maturity group from early to mid-late, can be sold under the general name Calabrais. The produce is suitable for both fresh consumption and processing.
