The biological norm for most tulip cultivars is a single flower; however, certain botanical forms and breeding groups are capable of producing an inflorescence consisting of several flowers.

Most cultivated tulip varieties are characterized by the development of a single flower at the apex of the flower stalk. Nevertheless, the botanical description of the genus allows for the presence of inflorescences consisting of two to five or more flowers, which is considered a rare varietal trait or a specific characteristic of certain groups in modern breeding.

In official DUS (Distinctness, Uniformity, and Stability) testing protocols, the presence of an inflorescence is recorded as a morphological trait. In commercial floriculture and forcing, multiflowering is not a target quality indicator, as the standard remains the formation of one large flower on a sturdy stem, unless otherwise specified by the characteristics of a particular class.
