Cultivation
Penstemon Schmidel.
Penstemon is valued in floristry for its spectacular vertical inflorescences, which should be harvested when 1/3 of the flowers have opened. To extend vase life, heat treatment of the stems is required.
In the reference 9 varieties crop Beard Tongue, where this is mentioned in the description.
The optimal stage for cutting Penstemon is when approximately one-third of the flowers on the inflorescence have opened, allowing the remaining buds to bloom in the vase. If cut too early, the buds risk not opening, and if cut too late, the lower flowers quickly wilt. To maintain decorative appeal for 7–14 days, the stems require mandatory 'sealing' of the tips in boiling water for 20 seconds.
The quality of cut flower material directly depends on growing conditions: to produce strong, lodging-resistant flower stalks, at least 6 hours of sunlight per day and good drainage are required. Excessive soil moisture reduces stem strength and promotes the development of root rots, making the plant unsuitable for cutting. Regular removal of flower stalks stimulates the growth of new shoots and extends the overall flowering period of the crop.
