Male sterility in carrot

Daucus carota L.

A tool for hybrid carrot breeding based on the exclusion of self-pollination in maternal lines to obtain F1 seeds. It predominantly includes the petaloid type, where stamens are replaced by petals, and the brown-anther type with defective brown anthers.

In the reference 6 varieties crop Carrot, where this is mentioned in the description.

In carrots, the petaloid type of male sterility is the most common, characterized by the formation of additional petals instead of stamens. The brown-anther type also occurs, which is typically marked by the presence of defective brown-colored anthers. Trait evaluation is conducted through visual phenotypic screening of inflorescences, during which the absence of viable pollen and the presence of morphological anomalies are recorded.

For breeding purposes, PCR markers such as cmt-1, cmt-2, and atp1-d1 are used, allowing for the identification of samples with petaloid cytoplasm at early stages of development. The stability of sterility expression is critical for commercial seed production, where hybrid purity is ensured by a three-line system using maintainer lines that prevent partial fertility restoration in the progeny.
