Daucus carota L.
A complex of aphid species damaging carrots includes the willow-carrot, carrot, hawthorn, and carrot root aphids. The harmfulness consists of leaf deformation, plant weakening, and the transmission of viral infections, in particular, the carrot red leaf virus.
In the reference 9 varieties crop Carrot, where this is mentioned in the description.
Specific species parasitize carrots, such as the willow-carrot aphid, which migrates from willow, and the carrot root aphid, which forms a characteristic white waxy coating on root crops. Leaf-dwelling species congregate on the underside of leaves and at the bases of petioles, causing curling and yellowing of the foliage, as well as promoting the development of sooty mold on honeydew secretions.
Functionally characterized aphid resistance genes in carrots are currently absent. Breeding is directed towards searching for sources of tolerance and quantitative trait loci, where resistance often correlates with morphological features of the epidermis, such as trichome density or the composition of the waxy coating.
