Pests

Aphids on Raspberry

Rubus idaeus L.

Two aphid species damage raspberries: the raspberry leaf aphid and the raspberry shoot aphid. These pests cause plant organ deformation and act as vectors for viral diseases, leading to reduced yield and winter hardiness.

In the reference 43 varieties crop Red raspberry, where this is mentioned in the description.

The most common aphid species found on raspberries are the raspberry leaf aphid (Amphorophora rubi Kalt.) and the raspberry shoot aphid (Aphis idaei v. d. Goot). The raspberry shoot aphid forms dense colonies on young shoots and leaf petioles, causing them to twist, wither, curl, and shortening the internodes. The raspberry leaf aphid typically settles in small groups on the underside of the leaves, leading to moderate plant deformation.

In addition to direct damage, aphids act as active vectors for viral infections, including raspberry vein mosaic and leaf spot. Mass reproduction of these insects negatively affects the overall condition of the plantations, causing premature summer leaf drop and an overall decline in crop productivity.
