The Malahat variety is a summer (floricane) variety with moderate vigor and an upright habit. Due to compact lateral canes, the plant is convenient for harvesting. The berries are characterized by a conical shape, bright red color, moderate firmness, and good flavor qualities.
The plant is resistant to Didymella and Botrytis cinerea, but is susceptible to anthracnose, root rot, and Raspberry bushy dwarf virus. The variety was bred for resistance to certain strains of the aphid Amphorophora agathonica, though susceptibility to biotypes that overcome this barrier has been noted.
The fruits detach easily from the receptacle, making the variety suitable for both manual harvesting and commercial mechanical harvesting. The variety ripens one week earlier than the Meeker variety and is primarily oriented toward the fresh market.
