Hordeum vulgare L.
Aphids are significant pests of barley, causing damage by sucking sap, which leads to chlorosis and organ deformation, as well as acting as vectors for Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV).
In the reference 13 varieties crop Barley, where this is mentioned in the description.
A complex of species parasitizes barley, including the English grain aphid, Russian wheat aphid, bird cherry-oat aphid, rose grain aphid, corn leaf aphid, and apple-grain aphid. Direct damage is accompanied by inhibited photosynthesis, necrosis, and delayed grain filling, while the transmission of BYDV leads to stunting and failure of plants to head.
In breeding, resistance to aphids in barley is often identified as a quantitative trait via QTL loci or specific genes, such as Rsg1, which provides resistance to Schizaphis graminum. To track these traits in breeding programs, molecular marker methods using SSR and SNP markers are employed, as there is no generally accepted classification of pest races analogous to fungal pathogen pathotypes.
