Aphids on soft wheat

Triticum aestivum L.

A complex of species from the Aphididae family that damage soft wheat by sap sucking and transmitting phytopathogenic viruses, leading to reduced yields and grain quality characteristics.

Species such as the English grain aphid, rose-grain aphid, bird cherry-oat aphid, and Russian wheat aphid are harmful to soft wheat crops. The damage manifests as yellowing, curling, and necrosis of leaves, and in cases of early mass infestation, it results in the failure of ear emergence and empty spikes.

Resistance to the Russian wheat aphid is controlled by the Dn gene group, for example, Dn1 and Dn2. In breeding, introgression methods of genetic material from wild relatives using DNA markers are employed to ensure resistance, with defense mechanisms realized through antibiosis and antixenosis.
