Aphid — Red Currant

Ribes rubrum L.

The red currant aphid (Cryptomyzus ribis) is the primary specialized pest of red currant. It causes the formation of characteristic red pseudo-galls on the leaves, leading to their deformation and a reduction in yield.

In the reference 10 varieties crop Redcurrant, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agent Cryptomyzus ribis belongs to the heteroecious species, for which currant serves as the primary host. During the summer period, the insects may migrate to intermediate host plants of the Lamiaceae family. The infestation is specific to red and white currants due to the delicate structure of the leaf blade, which allows the pest to form swellings.

Characteristic irregularly shaped bulges, colored yellow or red, form on the upper side of the leaves, under which aphid colonies are located on the underside of the leaf. Sap-sucking leads to premature drying of the leaves and suppression of the bush. Information regarding specific resistance genes to this pest is unavailable; breeding is conducted through the selection of cultivars with comprehensive field resistance.
