To evaluate the tolerance of common bentgrass to heavy metals, such as copper or lead, a standard rooting test is used, comparing root growth in nutrient solutions containing metal salts; bioconcentration and translocation factors are also calculated to analyze element accumulation in tissues.
The environmental adaptability of the crop to shading and poor soils is determined through metrics of turf density and biomass accumulation in comparison with control samples. Molecular markers, such as AFLP, are used to study the adaptive potential of populations.
The level of tolerance in bentgrass is determined by relative values, with wild ecotypes often exhibiting greater resistance to specific stresses than commercial cultivars. When this trait is highly expressed, a reduction in overall productivity may be observed in the absence of stress factors.
