Variety traits

Barley tolerance

Hordeum vulgare L.

Barley tolerance is the ability of the crop to maintain productivity under abiotic stress conditions, such as drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures. The trait is assessed through adaptability indices, laboratory seedling tests, and visual lodging resistance scales.

In the reference 119 varieties crop Barley, where this is mentioned in the description.

To assess barley tolerance, a complex of methods is applied, including the calculation of integral yield indicators under contrasting environmental conditions. Stress resistance coefficients, defined as the difference between maximum and minimum yields, as well as general adaptive capacity, genetic flexibility, and linear regression coefficients are used.

Laboratory tests are based on the seedling method, where growth energy and seed germination under salt stress or at low temperatures from 2 to 10 degrees Celsius serve as criteria. Lodging resistance, classified as a form of mechanical tolerance, is evaluated using 9-point scales and quantitative parameters of shoot density during the stem elongation phase according to the BBCH 30–31 scale.
