Tomato transportability

Solanum lycopersicum L.

A complex indicator of tomato fruit ability to maintain market quality and integrity during transit, depending on flesh firmness and the physical and mechanical properties of the skin.

In the reference 124 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

To objectively assess fruit transportability, instrumental methods are used to measure firmness, skin resistance to puncture and deformation, as well as the analysis of physiological indicators, including maturity stage and endogenous ethylene levels. In breeding practice, indirect traits are also considered, such as shelf life, uniformity of fruit weight and shape, and the percentage of standard marketable produce.

This trait has a direct impact on cultivation technology, determining the selection of varieties for mechanized harvesting, which requires synchronized ripening. Agrotechnically, fruit density is increased by applying calcium fertilizers to strengthen cell walls. When planning logistics, the risk of fruit damage during transport at temperatures around 12 °C is taken into account, as well as the need to remove damaged parts to prevent fungal diseases.
