Cicer arietinum L.
Thrips are insect pests of chickpea that feed on cell sap and cause leaf deformation, stunted growth, and terminal necrosis. The most significant species include Megalurothrips usitatus, Caliothrips indicus, Thrips tabaci, and Megalurothrips distalis.
In the reference 4 varieties crop Chickpea, where this is mentioned in the description.
On chickpea, thrips damage plants at all growth stages, from seedlings to the flowering and pod-filling periods. Visually, the damage manifests as discoloration of leaf margins, the appearance of characteristic light or brown spots and streaks, as well as deformation of vegetative organs.
In addition to direct mechanical tissue damage, thrips pose a threat as vectors of viral diseases that cause necrosis of terminal shoots. Specific resistance genes to this pest have not been identified in chickpea, and breeding efforts in this direction are limited, unlike the efforts for protection against fungal diseases.
