The main pest of chrysanthemum is the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, which causes bud deformation and necrotic spotting of petals. The insects also act as vectors for Tomato spotted wilt virus and Impatiens necrotic spot virus.

Damage manifests as light spots and silvery streaking on leaves caused by tissue destruction. In cases of severe infestation of inflorescences, buds become deformed and drop off, while petals are covered in brown-yellow spots and streaks, leading to a rapid loss of ornamental value.
No specific resistance genes to thrips have been identified in commercial chrysanthemum varieties. Breeding research is being conducted with wild relatives of the crop, where resistance is associated with morphological features, such as the density of T-shaped trichomes and the content of specific acids.
