The cultivation of chrysanthemums in open ground is determined by the plants' photoperiodic response to day length and their frost resistance, which divides varieties into garden Korean hybrids and heat-loving Indian forms.

The chrysanthemum is a short-day plant; therefore, in open ground, the flowering of most varieties naturally occurs in August–September as daylight hours decrease. The success of the crop depends on aligning the flowering period with the region's temperature profile, as late-blooming varieties require cover or relocation indoors before the first frosts.
Small-flowered Korean hybrids possess high frost resistance, tolerating temperatures down to -35°С, which allows them to be used as perennials in open ground. Large-flowered Indian varieties have low winter hardiness and are limited in their use. An important agrotechnical requirement is selecting elevated sites, as the crop is sensitive to waterlogging and the risk of root system rot.
